Here is the solution if the unique weight is number 1 and it is Lighter
than all others, followed by solution if it was Heavy.

1st weigh

Solver would place 1 2 3 & 4 on left side of scale and 5 6 7 8 on right side.
He now knows unique weight is either 1 2 3 or 4 being LIGHTER
OR 5 6 7 or 8 being HEAVIER

2nd weigh

Solver now places 1 2 & 6 on left side of scale and 3 4 & 5 on right side.
The left side would now be Light so the Solver knows the Unique Weight now
sits on the scale.

It must be either 1 or 2 as being Light or 5 as being Heavy.
Why?
It cannot be 3 4 5 or 6- WHY? look at Weigh #1 results.

3rd weigh

Solver now places 1 on left side and 2 on right side
The left side would now be Light.
It cannot be 2 as Heavy

Why?
Look at Weigh #1 results- weight number 2 was a POSSIBLE LIGHT
Therefore it must be 1 as Light

NOW WE ASSUME YOU SELECTED NUMBER 1 AS BEING HEAVY INSTEAD OF LIGHT.

1st weigh

Solver would place 1 2 3 and 4 on Left side of scale and 5 6 7 and 8 on Right side of scale.
Left side would be Heavy so it is either 1 2 3 4 as Heavy or 5 6 7 or 8 as Light.

2nd weigh

Solver now places 1 2 6 on left side and 3 4 5 on right side
The left side would be Heavy so it can’t be 6 3 or 4 due to
previous information- therefore must be 1 2 or 5.

3rd weigh

Solver places 1 on left side and 2 on right side. It must
be 1 Heavy since 2 low is in conflict
